Wood was used for a variety of purposes. Local timber was used to make scaffolding, while only the best quality oak was used for floor beams, portcullises, doors and roof timbers.
Wood for Royal castles would have come from the King's estates such as the Forest of Dean, where suitable oaks would have been grown.
